Semen Analysis & Oxidative Stress Testing
Understand your sperm health with specialist testing
Semen analysis is an important starting point when investigating male fertility. It assesses key characteristics of a semen sample to help build a clearer picture of sperm health and identify areas that may need further investigation.
Our semen analysis follows the World Health Organization (WHO) 6th edition guidelines and includes sperm oxidative stress testing as standard, giving you additional insight into your sperm health.
What does semen analysis assess?
Your semen sample is assessed against key parameters, including:
-
Sperm concentration: the number of sperm present in each millilitre of semen.
-
Total sperm count: the overall number of sperm in the sample.
-
Sperm motility: how well the sperm move.
-
Sperm morphology: the shape and structure of the sperm.
-
Semen volume: the amount of semen produced.
These parameters help provide a clearer picture of sperm health. However, no single test can guarantee fertility or determine on its own whether conception will occur.

Why include oxidative stress testing?
Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and the body's antioxidant defences. In sperm, excessive oxidative stress may affect sperm function and can be associated with damage to sperm cells.
Including oxidative stress testing alongside semen analysis provides additional information that may help inform discussions about sperm health and whether further investigation or support could be appropriate.
No waiting list. Results on the day.
We offer semen analysis with oxidative stress testing without a waiting list. Your results are available on the day, usually within 60–90 minutes, and are explained clearly so you can understand what they mean.
You'll receive a written report, have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss potential next steps and ongoing support where appropriate.
Sperm DNA Fragmentation Testing
Looking beyond the standard semen analysis
A standard semen analysis assesses important characteristics of sperm, including concentration, movement and shape. However, it does not assess the integrity of the DNA carried inside the sperm.
Sperm DNA fragmentation testing looks for damage or breaks in the DNA within sperm cells. This can provide additional information about sperm health and may be useful when investigating certain fertility concerns.
When might DNA fragmentation testing be considered?
Your clinician may recommend considering sperm DNA fragmentation testing in situations such as:
Repeated unsuccessful fertility treatment.
Recurrent pregnancy loss.
Unexplained fertility difficulties.
Where additional information about sperm health is needed.
Specialist DNA fragmentation testing
We offer the Comet Sperm DNA Fragmentation Test, carried out in partnership with Examen laboratory in Belfast.
The sample is sent to the laboratory for specialist analysis, with results usually available within 10 working days of being received in Belfast.
The findings can be discussed alongside your other fertility results to help build a more complete picture of sperm health and inform any appropriate next steps.
DNA fragmentation testing can be carried out alongside semen analysis, depending on your requirements.
Appointments are arranged directly with the clinic.

Semen Analysis & Oxidative Stress Testing
Understanding the microorganisms that may affect sperm health
The seminal microbiome refers to the microorganisms present in semen and the male reproductive and urinary tract.
Seminal microbiome testing looks for the presence of bacteria, viruses, yeasts and fungi, helping to identify microorganisms that may be relevant to reproductive health.
An imbalance in the microbiome, sometimes referred to as dysbiosis, may be associated with inflammation or other factors that could affect the reproductive environment.
What does the test look for?
The test examines the microorganisms present in the sample, providing additional information about the seminal microbiome.
This may help identify potential imbalances that could be worth discussing with a healthcare professional, particularly where there are ongoing fertility concerns or a need for further investigation.
How does the testing work?
The seminal microbiome test is completed using a home sample collection kit. Your sample is sent away for specialist laboratory analysis.
Results are usually available within 3–5 weeks. Once received, your findings can be discussed with you to help explain what they mean and whether any further steps may be appropriate.
Semen Analysis & Oxidative Stress Testing
Preparing for your semen analysis
We want you to feel comfortable and know exactly what to expect before your appointment. Once your appointment has been arranged, you'll receive clear instructions on how to prepare and collect your sample.
Providing your sample
You have two options:
Option 1: Bring a sample from home
You can collect your sample at home and bring it to the clinic, provided it can be delivered within 50 minutes of collection. You'll be given instructions on how to collect, store and transport your sample correctly.
Appointments are usually around 60 minutes when bringing a sample from home.
Option 2: Provide your sample at the clinic
If you live further away or cannot bring a sample within the required timeframe, you can provide your sample at the clinic.
Please allow approximately 90 minutes for your appointment. This allows time for the sample to liquefy before testing can take place.
Before your appointment
You'll receive guidance on:
-
How long to abstain from ejaculation before testing.
-
How to collect your sample correctly.
-
How to store and transport your sample.
-
What to expect when you arrive at the clinic.
If you have any questions before your appointment, you can contact the clinic directly.
Understanding Your Results & Ongoing Support
Clear results, explained properly
We understand that fertility testing can sometimes feel overwhelming, particularly when you're faced with unfamiliar terminology and results that you may not know how to interpret.
That's why we believe clear explanations and ongoing support are just as important as the testing itself.
Once your results are available, we'll arrange to discuss the findings with you, explain what they mean and answer any questions you may have.
You'll also receive a written report outlining your results, giving you something to refer back to after your appointment.
What happens next?
Depending on your results and individual circumstances, we can discuss potential areas for improvement, whether further investigation may be helpful and what steps you could consider next.
Our aim is to help you better understand your sperm health and feel more informed about the options available to you.
You don't have to navigate your results alone.
